Training up Dads to help Mom through labor!
Dads to be: This course has 13 short videos, about 90 minutes in all, from doula Suzi Coleman. Geared for Dads, benefiting Moms.
Nervous dad? This is for you if...
- It's your first baby and you have no idea what labor actually looks like.
- It's not your first baby and you need a refresher on labor, delivery and how you can make it better.
- You want a real job on the big day, and you'd like to know it ahead of time.
- Mom sent you this link. Smart lady!
- You want to be better prepared to support Mom so the birth is better for both of you.
How do you know Mom's stressed? Hungry? Tired?
A small survey you can take now, to better help you understand what Mom needs now, during labor and postpartum.
Try it together tonight!
When Mom's stressed
-
Question 1 of 4
What tells me you're stressed, before you say a word?
Ask about the little signs. Then ask which ones you usually miss.
-
Question 2 of 4
When you're stressed, what actually helps?
Listening, fixing it, a hug, or some space? Ask how you'll know which one Mom wants.
-
Question 3 of 4
What makes it harder?
Let Mom be honest, even if it's something you do. Write it down and don't argue!
-
Question 4 of 4
What's one thing I could take off your plate completely?
Pick one job you can own, so Mom never has to remind you.
When Mom's hungry
-
Question 1 of 4
What tells me you're getting hungry?
Everyday signs first. Then ask what's different now that baby is on the way.
-
Question 2 of 4
When you're hungry, what helps?
Favorite snacks and drinks, and whether Mom would rather be asked or just handed something.
For labor itself, ask your doctor or midwife what Mom can eat and drink.
-
Question 3 of 4
What makes it harder?
Foods that sound awful lately, or questions that feel like one more decision.
-
Question 4 of 4
Which food job can I own?
The grocery run, a snack stash, tomorrow's lunch. Pick one and keep it going.
When Mom's tired
-
Question 1 of 4
What tells me you're running low on energy?
Ask what changes before Mom hits empty, so you can catch it early.
-
Question 2 of 4
What helps you actually rest?
Quiet, a nap, time alone, or someone else handling the house for a while.
-
Question 3 of 4
What makes resting harder?
Include things you might say, like telling Mom to relax. (Oops!)
-
Question 4 of 4
What can I take over so you can rest?
Name the job and do the whole thing, without being asked twice.
